Shri Shyam Sunder Gupta is an IRSE Officer (Batch of 1981) with over 35 years of distinguished service in managerial, administrative, and technical roles within Indian Railways. His career includes leadership positions such as Principal Chief Engineer (Southern Railway and North Western Railway), Executive Director (Track Procurement) Railway Board, Divisional Railway Manager (Bikaner Division, NWR), Chief Bridge Engineer (NCR and NWR), and Director (Bridges & Structures) at RDSO.

He has proven expertise in the planning, design, and execution of large-scale railway construction projects including new lines, doubling, and gauge conversion. His wide-ranging experience also spans tendering and contract management for project design and implementation. Post-retirement, he has extended his contribution to metro rail systems, managing DDC contracts of Chennai Metro and GC contracts of Mumbai Metro as Director (Railways & Metros) at CEG Ltd., Jaipur.

Alongside his engineering career, Mr. Gupta has earned global recognition in the field of Number Recreations, a passion he has pursued since 1978, when his first paper “Miracles of Last Digit” was published. His contributions have since appeared in leading publications such as Science Reporter, Science Today, Math Education, American Mathematical Monthly (USA), Mathematical Gazette (UK), Math. Spectrum (UK), Scientia Magna (USA), and several international books.

His pioneering website, www.shyamsundergupta.com, dedicated to Number Recreations, attracts visitors from more than 150 countries. Among his major discoveries are EPRN (Equal Product Of Reversible Numbers), Rare Numbers, Unique Numbers, Palindromic Pseudoprimes, the Fifth-Order Prime Polynomial, and a 17,350-digit memorable prime number.

Experience

Shri Shyam Sunder Gupta’s professional journey spans decades of leadership across Indian Railways and beyond. Since August 2020, he has been contributing as Former Principal Chief Engineer (Freelance), bringing his expertise in railway infrastructure and project execution to new dimensions. Prior to this, from April 2019 to July 2020, he served as Director (Railways & Metros) at Consulting Engineers Group Ltd., where he was responsible for the General Consultancy (GC) of Civil Works for Mumbai Metro Line 5 (East).

Earlier, from July 2016 to March 2018, he was appointed Principal Chief Engineer, North Western Railway, based in Jaipur. In this capacity, he oversaw the management and maintenance of fixed infrastructure such as tracks, bridges, and structures. Before this assignment, he held the same position as Principal Chief Engineer, Southern Railway, Chennai (September 2015 to July 2016), with similar responsibilities for large-scale railway infrastructure.

From October 2012 to September 2015, he served as Executive Director (Track Procurement) at the Railway Board, Indian Railways, New Delhi, where his primary role was the planning and procurement of rails, weldable CMS crossings, and track fittings. These assignments reflect his remarkable versatility, moving seamlessly between on-ground engineering execution, high-level planning, and procurement policy within Indian Railways.

Beyond these prominent roles, Shri Gupta’s long and distinguished career also includes senior appointments as Divisional Railway Manager (Bikaner Division, NWR), Chief Bridge Engineer on both NCR and NWR, and Director (Bridges & Structures) at RDSO, among many others. His cumulative experience of more than three and a half decades captures the full spectrum of railway engineering, design, planning, execution, management, and innovation.
